About the project
We were commissioned to carry out a large scale multi-disciplinary survey of the Smithfield site in central Birmingham as part of a £1.9bn regeneration scheme. The main element was a topographical survey of the former Wholesale Market site and the surrounding roads, covering an area of approximately 17ha of inner-city Birmingham.
- The centre of the site was surveyed traditionally with the surrounding roads scanned for both speed and safety.
- We also scanned some of the buildings on site to inform the demolition process including an underground attenuation tank scanned through manholes with the inverted tripod.
- The survey provided the basis for developing the site temporarily into a Beach Volleyball and Basketball venue for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
